Over the past 40 years, the Scottish Civic Trust has taken an
active interest in the quality of development across
Scotland. Well informed independent advice and opinion can
pay an important role in planning.
A key role of the Civic Trust network in Scotland is to act as a
watchdog. Scrutinising planning applications and development
plans is important. Offering critical comments on schemes
that could affect the amenity of a town, neighbourhood, building or
wider area is positive democratic activity.
The Planning Etc (Scotland) Act 2006 introduced a new
hierarchy of planning applications. Major applications
will be subjected to a statutory pre-application consultation, and
local civic societies are advised to make their interest known to
the local planning authority.
A main objective of the Scottish Civic Trust is to support local
groups. Increasingly, it is not possible for the Trust to
examine individual cases. We invite local groups affiliated
to the Trust to call on us to assist them on significant
development cases where they think our involvement could be
beneficial.
When to consult SCT:
- Particularly contentious local schemes where a "second" opinion
might be helpful
- Significant heritage impact to important local assets
- Substantial town centre regeneration schemes
- Major edge-of-settlement proposals
