What We Do

Pursuing, Promoting & Involving

Our Local Heritage Management project emerges from the core work of the Trust, which has been supported by Historic Scotland in past years through its annual support grant.

Key objectives of the Scottish Civic Trust are in our Trust Deed.  It includes purposes such as:
“the elimination and prevention of ugliness whether arising from bad design neglect or any other cause” together with “the preservation of buildings and features of artistic merit or historic interest” which summarise neatly the foundation upon which this project is built.

Local Heritage Management Capacity Building
The Trust aims to support local people, communities, organisations and government in the effective management and appreciation of Scotland’s heritage assets. We provide independent advice on historic environment management and protection which could be in the form of comments on planning applications or policy consultations, the preparation of conservation area appraisals, guidance documents published on our website, or more informal advice provided to individuals or groups on conservation or planning issues.

Look at the News & Views section of our website for our latest activities or get in touch to see how we could help you.

Scotland’s Local Civic Trust Network
The Scottish Civic Trust acts as an umbrella body for over 100 local civic societies and local environment groups spanning the length and breadth of Scotland. Civic societies play a key role in the protection, betterment and management of Scotland’s communities and local environment. We aim to support and enhance Scotland’s local Civic Trust network as a driving force for effective local historic environment advocacy. We can assist local groups in forming a civic society, provide support for capacity building, or give talks or presentations.

See the Civic Trust Network section of our website.

Partnerships & Relationships
The Trust maintains partnerships with other heritage and design organisations and liaises with other interested parties to advance historic environment issues. For example the Trust is represented on the Glasgow Urban Design Panel and is a member of the Built Environment Forum for Scotland (BEFS).
